WALKS and SPECIAL PLACES

toad stoolUsing Westport as a base creates almost endless opportunity to explore a huge area of natures best.
In days gone by the natural resources of the West Coast of the South Island formed the foundation of the local economy and indeed, at the time created more wealth than all other regions combined.

Today almost 90% of the West Coast region is managed by the Dept. of Conservation.
Relics of the past can still be found in abundance and many walks follow old miners and loggers trails through a landscape of amazing beauty and variety, ranging from sea level swamp and podocarp rain forest to sub alpine rock landscapes.

The Beautiful Buller pages deal with the Northern West Coast,Buller District only. The primary function is to raise awareness of this magnificent district, so richly endowed with nature's beauty and free for anybody to enjoy. For navigational purposes the district is subdivided into 4 areas, each area has up to 6 kinds of walks to choose from. There are Visitor Information Centres in Karamea, Westport and Punakaiki as well as Dept. of Conservation field offices. Up to date track information is available at these offices. Some locations are seldom visited and real special places.
All care has been taken to give correct information but no responsibility can be taken.

Use common sense and enjoy.
