Birds Ferry Lodge is ideally situated to explore the Northern West Coast of the South Island and is located midway between the West Coast glaciers and Nelson/Picton/Abel Tasman, making it the perfect spot to break your journey. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, the Lodge is 2km from the main road and accessed from State Highway 6 via our own private road. We are 15 minutes South from Westport and 30 minutes North from Punakaiki.

From the South, We are 8KM North of Charleston. Drive North on SHW6 from Charleston. You will cross the (Little) Totara River then after crossing the Big Totara River drive slowly for a further 1.1KM, at the top of the hill turn left into Birds Ferry Road.

From Westport, 17km from Westport on SH6 you will come to Birds Ferry Road on your Right.Watch for the wooden sign on the right, at the end of a long straight section of road.

From NelsonTake SHW6. Take care at Inangahua Junction. You need to take SHW6 not SHW69. 7km out of Westport take the left/south turn for Greymouth (SH6) and drive for 11km.Watch for the wooden sign on the right, at the end of a long straight section of road. Once on Birds Ferry Road follow the power poles for 1.8km, on the unsealed road, to the gate where a warm welcome awaits you.

Ferry Mans Cottage - Guests should proceed directly to the cottage which is 300m beyond the Lodge on Birds Ferry Road.

Take you time! It is very easy to underestimate the travel distances and times when planning your trip. We don't recommend that you try to travel to Birds Ferry Lodge from any further away than Fox/Franz Joseph Glaciers,Nelson, Picton, Able Tasman,Collingwood,Christchurch,Akaroa,Hanmer Springs. By keeeping this in mind you will have an enjoyable day travelling and you will arrive fresh and ready to explore this fabulous location.If you would like us to recommend suitable accommodation within an easy drive from here then please just ask.
