The Guiding Service at Birds Ferry Lodge

To help you get the most from your stay at Birds Ferry Lodge we offer a personal guiding service around the local area in our licensed passenger vehicle.For guests staying for more than one night a half days guiding is complimentary. (Subject to availability, prior arrangement is essential to avoid disappointment)

After a leisurely breakfast, Andre will discuss with you your interests and ambitions for the day and together you will decide what you would like to do. A packed lunch can be included if required.

For 15 years André has guided small groups around the South Island and he will tailor a tour to suit your individual interests and abilities.He has extensive knowledge of the flora and fauna of the South island, which he will be delighted to share with you on one of his trips.

Around the Charleston area

The tours can take in a wide range of local attractions.The gold mining areas of Charleston, where 20 000 gold miners lived in tents 150 years ago, has a large selection of walking and cycling tracks.(Lodge bikes are available). Majestic limestone cliffs and caves are there to be explored.

Buller back country

The back country of the Buller can be explored via one of the many forestry tracks which wind their way up into the mountains of the Paparoa Ranges. These tracks are suitable for walking, cycling or if you wish, in our four wheel drive vehicle.

Explore our property and learn

Closer to home, Andre will guide you for 3 hours on our own property taking in native mature rainforest, unique swamp environment and our 'mini home farm'. This tour is jam packed with interpertation and you will learn about the native flora and fauna you see on the walk.This trip can be tailored to any fitness level.

Fishing

What about some fishing? We have a small selection of tackle available for loan. A fishing licence is required which can be purchased in Westport.
